Kanpur AnchaliaMahavidyalaya, Kanpur, Dist. Cuttack in the state of Odisha is an established Non Government Aided Degree College offering academic programmes up to degree level in humanities & Science. The geographical location, the socio economic cultural back-ground of the place have played a pivotal role in the establishment & growth of a degree College in this remote part of the state. Kanpur is a culturally rich place of Narasinghpur, a former princely state of Odisha. Being located at a distance of 120 kms from the district headquarters, Cuttack & 150 kms.from the state headquarters Bhubaneswar Kanpur is a picturesque spot which lies on 200 18| N latitude & 850 16| E longitude. Kanpur is situated at a distance of 52 kms. from the district headquarters Nayagarh, 65 kms. from the district headquarters Angul and 70 kms. from the district headquarters Dhenkanal. On the eastern side of Kanpur there is the Rusipada hill with ancient natural caves and to the west there is Baneswara hill with Buddhist remains of national importance a famous tourist spot. On the southern side of Kanpur flows river Mahanadi, the life line of Odisha and a green hillock BruddhiMundia. Towards the north of Kanpur there stands the Chandragiri hill and runs the state high way from Cuttack to Narasinghpur. Kanpur was a commercial centre of medieval & British Odisha having trade links in the water route of Mahanadi with Cuttack on one side and Sambalpur, Sonepur on the other. At Kanpur there are four beautiful temples of the medieval period with exquisite sculptures such as Jagannath temple, Gopinath temple, Raghunath temple and Balukeswar temple. The great exponent of Bhakti movement of the medieval period Sri Chaitanya visited this place in 1510 AD. The GoudyaVaishnava monastery "ChaitanyaMatha" of Kanpur commemorates his visit. Another UtkaliyaVaishnava monastery is also situated here.
Towards the close of 19th century the then king of Narasinghpur princely state had established schools for the spread of education in this historic place. However for the spread of higher education, the establishment of a college at Kanpur was cherished in the minds of the enlightened people of the locality towards the seventies of 20th century. The dream was translated into reality with the establishment of a college on 01.11.1978, with the sincere and concerted efforts as well as humble contributions of the people of the locality. The College started with 52 students on roll in Intermediate Arts and started functioning in the Boys hostel structure of BanshidharaVidyapitha, Kanpur. The College was christened as Kanpur AnchalikaMahavidyalaya, Kanpur. Situated in a calm, serene, picturesque spot with mango & jackfruit groves surrounded by green hills all around, far from the madding crowd it has a congenial atmosphere of learning. Since its inception it has been committed to quality education and also to its social commitment to bring down higher education to the grass root level & to provide higher education to the poor and women students of the locality.
The infant institution has gradually grown and metamorphosed to a degree College in 1986. The College which is affiliated to Utkal University and recognized by the State Government of Odisha is the first Degree College of Narasinghpur Block. At present the College has 8.92 acres of recorded land at its disposal. The present College building stands on an area of 03 acres of land. The College at present provides Class rooms, Laboratories, Administrative building, Sports & Gymnastic hall, Play ground, Computer Laboratory, Examination Cell, Career counseling centre, SAMS resource centre, Network resource centre, YRC, NSS wings, Boys' & girls' common rooms, Teachers' common room, Boys' bicycle stand and Girls' bicycle stand, Canteen, Automated Library, (with Inflibnet and reprography facility) All these constitute an ideal academic environment.
The College now offers programmes like 3 year B.A. general course with subjects like English, MIL(O), History, Economics, Political Science, Odia, Philosophy, Education, Sanskrit, three year BA Honours. In History, Political Science & Education and three year B.Sc. general course with Physical Science & Biological Science. The College also offers courses like the Communicative English and Computer Literacy Programme.
At present the College is functioning as a composite college of both +2 & +3 wings and the students strength has increased up to 925 in the academic year 2013-14.
During the last 35 years of its existence the College authorities have developed the infrastructure of the College to accommodate the growing needs of the students. The resource for the growth of the college is attributed to the development fees from the students and the grants from the UGC and the State Government of Odisha. The College was recognized U/S 2f. & 12b of UGC Act in the year 1991 and has received UGC grants from 8th plan to 12th plan period.
At present the Principal of the College and Sub-Collector, Athgarh function as the Secretary and President of the Governing Body of the College respectively.
With the initiative & guidance of the President, the Principal Cum Secretary and the sustained endeavour and active cooperation of the stakeholders like the academic enthusiasts of the locality, parents, alumni, the members of staff both teaching and non teaching& the students, the college is committed to quality education and determined to transform it to an ideal & premier institution of Higher Education in the state of Odisha.
